Prevention: how to effectively protect your motorcycle against theft

Collect all evidence of the loss

First, put on your Lieutenant Colombo raincoat to collect all the evidence of the disaster and take photos: broken lock, or your two-wheeler, forced garage door, etc.

Report the theft to the police immediately

You have 24 hours to do this at a police station or by calling your local police zone number or the emergency number 101. But it is better to do it as soon as possible. Firstly to increase your chances of finding your motorbike, but also so that you cannot be held liable in the event of any offences or crimes committed by the thief (speeding, accidents, hit and runs, etc.).

If the theft was committed abroad, the policyholder is required, if the vehicle is not found, to also file a complaint with the Belgian police or the judicial authority upon your return to Belgium.

In all cases, the police will provide you with proof of your theft report which you must then send to your P&V advisor if you are insured against theft.

If you have been assaulted and injured, even slightly, during the theft of your motorcycle, have it certified by a doctor who will give you the initial medical certificate of assault and battery. This document is essential since it will serve as the basis for the medical assessment of the injuries.

Then notify your P&V intermediary, they are there to help you.

If you are insured against theft, the maximum period to notify your P&V insurance intermediary is 8 days. Even if you are not insured against theft, notify P&V insurance within 72 hours. And this is to suspend your RC and your other possible guarantees.

This one will do everything to assist you. Gather for him all the documents that can account for the value of your stolen two-wheeler: purchase invoices, revisions and repairs, new tires, accessories… All these supporting documents will allow him to evaluate as accurately as possible the amount of your compensation. And also provide him with proof of your theft report made to the police. You will also be asked to prove the theft of your motorcycle by presenting its 2 sets of keys as well as the registration certificate.

What insurance covers the theft of my motorcycle?

As with cars, motorcycle liability insurance is mandatory for riding a motorcycle. However, it does not cover you against theft. To receive compensation in the event of theft of your two-wheeler, you must have taken out theft cover. This cover is an option within the P&V motorcycle comprehensive insurance.

What does the theft guarantee cover?

Theft insurance compensates you if:

your two-wheeler has been stolen . The compensation received will depend on the agreements made at the time of taking out the insurance;

your two-wheeler has been damaged following an attempted theft

When does it not intervene?

Please note, however  : whatever the formula chosen, you are not covered:

if the perpetrators or accomplices of the theft are the policyholder, the holder, the driver or the owner of the vehicle or persons living in their household or one of their employees;

if the keys and/or any other element intended for starting the vehicle were left on the vehicle, unless the vehicle was in an individual garage and locked at the time of the incident and there was a break-in;

if the keys and/or any other element intended for starting the vehicle have been left in a visible place accessible to the public;

if the required anti-theft or post-theft system has not been installed or activated;

Also note that restrictions or remedies exist if, at the time of the loss:

How much compensation is there if my motorcycle is stolen?

If your motorcycle is damaged as part of an attempted theft, the repair costs will be covered. If you have an invoice for these costs, you will also recover the VAT. If you are subject to VAT, you can recover the VAT, or part of it, via your VAT return.

If your motorcycle has not been found after 20 days, it will be considered a total loss. In the event of a total loss, P&V applies different formulas to calculate compensation. You choose the system to apply when you take out your policy. There are significant premium differences between the formulas: one may offer more extensive coverage than the other.

The value for which you have insured your motorcycle will determine the compensation in the event of a total loss. This value can be:

actual value: value of the two-wheeler just before the theft. This value is determined by an expert and takes into account the wear and tear of the vehicle;

the agreed or conventional value: the contract stipulates from the outset how a total loss will be compensated.
